South Devon Combined Yacht Clubs

Their purpose is clear,
“to encourage the owners and crews of yachts out to race together on coastal, and offshore races and some more local races. The more yachts out the better the racing.”
Last year we had good turnouts for the popular weekend races to the Yealm (near Plymouth),
and Salcombe, and for the coastal races such as the ‘Gallon of Rum Race’ (Dartmouth-
The yachts also join in the ever popular Offshore Week, run by Royal Torbay Yacht Club, that races cross channel to the Channel Islands and North France.
How it works
Each club runs its annual series of races. Certain of these, usually the major coastal and weekend events, are opened up to SDCYC members. Entry is all included in the annual SDCYC fee. When SDCYC coordinated races are scheduled, the other member clubs have agreed to not run club and other cruiser races that would clash. That way we get the better turnouts which leads to better racing.
Races are generally scheduled for every 3 weeks from May till end of September and include events to Salcombe, Yealm, Darmouth and Teignmouth for weekends away. Usually there is a good social gathering at the ports which helps develop the spirit of the races and the competition.
However these events while clearly for racing provide a good basis for Cruising boats to join in as well and even race in the non IRC fleet, even without spinnakers. And we would also encourage the cruising fleets or individual club cruisers to also join in the weekends to help build the fun at the visited venue.
